In Year 6, we spent the week enjoying the book 'The Bear and the Piano'. Our English learning was centred around putting ourselves in the bear's position. We considered the bear's decision about moving to the city and wrote a letter from his perspective to other bears. We created artwork that was inspired by an image from the book where we thought about what other people value in us.
Ultimately, the children were able to spend a significant percentage of their week reading. This was pushed further by the reading challenge that was completed at home and at school. The Year 6 teachers were delighted with how well the children engaged with the week and we're looking forward to some wonderful reading as we move through Spring and into the Summer term!
Last week, the entire school took part in our yearly Book Week. We value this week enormously at St. Mary’s as we know just how important reading is to our children. In an effort to engage the children, each year group chose picture books to share with their children and the learning for the week centred on that book. The teachers were delighted with the effort children put into their potato characters; a video of our children’s creations is available to watch on the school website. A key focus of our week is our Sponsored Reading Challenge. Again, we have been delighted with how well the children have engaged with this across the school. At the time of writing, we have a staggering £1,231 which means we have surpassed our original target of £1,000 and there is still time to donate. The staff would like to take an opportunity to thank every person who has raised money for our school and the library and we look forward to sharing how we spend every penny on new books for our school library.
